The Nelson Giants

The Nelson Giants is the only team to have continuously participated in the NZ National Basketball League since its inception in 1980.

The Nelson Giants have become one of the true success stories of New Zealand sport, establishing a reputation as the most successful and professionally run team in the league. We have a diverse target audience from families, life long fans and school children through to corporate groups and their clients.

Since 1994, the Nelson Giants have been in the play-offs thirteen of sixteen years, winning three national titles. A look in New Zealand’s sports history books, whether it is rugby, cricket, netball, soccer, tennis or basketball, shows there would be few other provincial towns, which have been so dominant in a National Provincial 1st Division competition.

Team History

Due to the on-going success and style of the Nelson Giants, the team has created a nationwide support base, attracting one of the largest home and away spectator numbers in the league as well as a huge amount of national and regional media interest. Locally the Nelson Giants continue to place considerable emphasis on coaching programmes and local charity work. In return, the Nelson/Marlborough/West Coast communities provide a type of home game fanaticism which is relished by the Nelson Giants and feared by the opposition.
